☁️ Getting Started with Google Drive & Shared Drives

This guide covers how to access your Google Drive, upload files, and work around restrictions when moving folders to Shared Drives.

🔐 Accessing Google Drive

  1. Navigate to drive.google.com.
  2. Log in using your Edison credentials:

📤 Adding Files or Folders

There are two simple ways to upload content to your Drive.

Method 1: The "New" Button

  1. Click the large + New button in the top left corner of the screen.
  2. Select File upload or Folder upload.
  3. Browse your computer to select the items you wish to upload.

Method 2: Drag and Drop

You can drag files directly from Windows File Explorer into the Google Drive window.

  • Targeting Specific Folders: When dragging a file over a folder in Drive, that folder will highlight blue. This indicates that if you drop the file, it will go inside that specific folder.
  • Warning: Be careful where you drop your file! It will save wherever the blue highlight appears.

📂 Moving Folders to a Shared Drive

Note: Moving an entire folder from your personal "My Drive" to a "Shared Drive" is often restricted by Google to prevent ownership conflicts.

To get around this, you must Download the folder and Re-upload it to the Shared Drive.

Step-by-Step Workaround:

  1. Right-click the folder in your Google Drive that you want to move.
  2. Select Download. (Google will zip the folder).
  3. Open the downloaded Zip file on your computer.
  4. Click Extract All and choose a location on your computer to save the files.
  5. Navigate to the Shared Drive in your browser where you want the folder to live.
  6. Use the Folder Upload method (or Drag and Drop) to upload the unzipped folder to its new home.
